What to Wear for Your Family Photo Session (Without Overthinking It)
One of the most common questions I get is: “What should we wear?”
And I get it—it can feel like a lot of pressure. You want everything to look beautiful, cohesive, and timeless… but also still feel like you.
The good news? It doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few simple guidelines, you can show up feeling confident and relaxed—and that’s what makes the biggest difference in your photos.
1. Start with You (Yes, You)
If there’s one place to start, it’s with your outfit.
Choose something you feel comfortable and confident in—because if you feel good, it shows. From there, build everyone else’s outfits around yours.
Flowy dresses, soft textures, and pieces that move naturally tend to photograph beautifully and add a sense of ease to your images.
2. Coordinate—Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone in identical outfits.
Instead, aim for a cohesive color palette. Think soft neutrals, earth tones, or muted colors that work well together.
This creates a more natural, timeless look—while still letting each person’s personality come through.
3. Keep It Timeless
Your photos are something you’ll come back to for years, so it’s best to avoid anything overly trendy.
Skip:
large logos
neon colors
bold, distracting patterns
These can pull attention away from what actually matters—your connection.
4. Think About Movement + Texture
Some of the most beautiful images come from movement.
Flowy dresses, layered pieces, and soft fabrics add depth and dimension to your photos.
Even small details—like a knit sweater or linen fabric—can make your images feel more dynamic and visually interesting.
5. Dress for the Season + Location
Colorado weather can be unpredictable, so comfort matters more than you think.
If it’s cold, layer up. If it’s warm, choose breathable fabrics. When everyone is comfortable, it’s so much easier to relax into the moment.
Also think about your surroundings—your outfits should complement the environment, not compete with it.
6. Shoes Matter More Than You Think
It’s easy to forget about footwear—but it shows up in photos more than you’d expect.
Choose something simple, neutral, and comfortable enough to walk in (especially for outdoor sessions).
7. Don’t Stress About Perfection
This is the most important one.
The goal isn’t perfectly coordinated outfits—it’s connection.
Some of the best moments come from the in-between: your kids running around, wind in your hair, the way you naturally interact with each other.
In fact, photographers often emphasize that the most meaningful photos come from relaxed, candid moments—not perfectly posed ones.
At the end of the day, what you wear matters far less than how you feel.
When you’re comfortable, present, and focused on each other—that’s when the magic happens.
And that’s exactly what I’m here to capture.
